My top 5 non-negotiables I look for when choosing a photographer

Well… obviously pick me, choose me, love me!!

I feel like Meredith from Grey’s Anatomy but without the air of desperation. There are so many wonderful, talented and amazing photographers to choose from which I know does not make your choice to find one it any easier.

So how do you choose the right photographer that suits you and your vision with your session? For me personally, if I was looking to update my family photo wall, these are the top 5 things I would focus on when choosing my photographer.

1.  Style and Portfolio

Review their portfolio to ensure their style matches what you envision. Whether it’s candid, posed, natural light, or studio photography, choose someone whose work showcases a variety of locations, lighting, and a variety of people.

2.  Patience & Personality

A great family photographer should have a warm, friendly demeanour and plenty of patience, especially when working with kids (and husbands) who may be shy or uncooperative. You will want to have someone who can make you laugh, share funny anecdotes, but most importantly, someone who you feel comfortable with.

3.  Experience
Look for a photographer experienced in working with families, especially if young children are involved. They should know how to make kids comfortable and capture genuine moments.

4.  Location & Flexibility
Check if the photographer offers options for on-location shoots (parks, beaches, or your home) or studio sessions, depending on your preference. Flexibility with scheduling is also a bonus, especially with kids and with unexpected weather.

5.  Client Reviews & Recommendations
Some photographers are recommended by word of mouth from a friend of a friend by a friend. Read reviews or ask for recommendations from other families. Look for positive feedback about professionalism, patience, and the overall experience.

There are so more factors to take into consideration and I strongly suggest do your own research on what speaks to you because at the end of the day, it is your experience. Everyone has different expectations, creative ideas and varying non-negotiables when considering your photographer.

When you find the right one, you will know because you will make a connection and it will feel right.

Hope this helps!
